The musical tells the lighthearted yet tragic struggles of a young lion cub named Simba, who is fated by birthright to become the King of the Pride Lands after his father. The African territory however is still a dangerous place, as even in this often lighthearted musical, misfortune strikes when the young prince's father and King is murdered because of the betrayal of his evil uncle Scar, who wishes to take over as King of the Pride Lands. The young Simba fears for his own life and goes into exile for much of his early childhood. In his time away, he encounters new friends, Timon and Pumbaa, who live a worry-free lifestyle and influence him to do the same. the young prince's easygoing lifestyle then suddenly changes when he once more encounters his childhood companion Nala, who reveals the tyranny of Scar to him and appeals to him to overthrow his abusive uncle.
This incredibly powerful story of tragedy, true friendship, and fearless leadership is enhanced by the original film's music, written by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original songs, partnered with additional music and lyrics from the likes of Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have contributed to the immense success of the musical not only in local performances, but also in international productions.
