The Lion King at Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Ranked presently as the third of Broadway’s longest-running musicals of all time, Disney’s The Lion King has brought the 1994 original film to life with multiple shows that have reached not just several states in the United States, but also South America, Europe, and Asia among others. On August, it adds another to its toured cities as The Lion King musical will be touring in Queen Elizabeth Theatre at Vancouver on Tuesday 26th August 2025!

Disney's The Lion King, since its inception and move to the Broadway stage in 1997, has changed the landscape of Broadway and theater entirely. With a timeless tale adapted beautifully to theater with the special approach of life-sized puppetry of animals and an African-inspired musical score and compositions, the musical was considered an awesome shock to both supporters of the original film as well as even recent theatergoers.

Leveling up from an already riveting production, The Lion King is also without a doubt one of the most awarded shows in every single award season it was part of. In quick fashion after its premiere, the Broadway show was nominated for over 20 awards, garnering 6 Tonys in that year alone comprising of Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (by Richard Hudson), Best Choreography (by Garth Fagan), Best Lighting Design (by Donald Holder), Best Direction of a Musical and Best Costume Design (by Julie Taymor). The award bestowed for Best Direction of a Musical is considered important, as Julie Taymor is the first woman to ever gain the award.

Over the next two decades, The Lion King continued to take all the awards and commendations with more than over 70 major theater awards and nominations conferred. In the musical's many tours and shows all over the world, it has been awarded by numerous bodies including the NY Drama Critics Circle, The Grammys, the Laurence Olivier Awards, the Molière Awards, and the Helpmann Awards.
