The musical Lion King tells the story of the life of the young lion cub Simba, who before long is forced to come to terms with his fate of succeeding as the King of the Pride Lands due to the unexpected death of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a well-loved leader by the animals of the Pride Lands, suffers betrayal from from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which ends in his murder. This forces Simba into into exile for a long period of time, and jumpstarts the Prince's personal change and his eventual homecoming to his land and his destined rule as King.
Inspired by the previous 1994 movie of the the very same title released by Disney, The Lion King was skillfully transformed to the Broadway platform by director Julie Taymor and the impressive ensemble and production crew. Its launch in the 90s was a fresh addition to theater, being a multi-awarded debut. Greg Evans of Variety summarizes the musical with very positive words in his article, sharing that “Julie Taymor's approach of this Broadway mainstay is a phenomenon, a assured box office hit unequaled in its cultural and historical foundation. Leaping far beyond its celluloid inspiration, the Broadway showing greatly upgrades distinct creative choices of the hit 1994 animated movie, from color and vibrancy and plot to Lebo M's score and the freshly Africanized original songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."
The ongoing musical was also received with the top commendations from theatergoers. A post specifically points to how this musical adaptation can aptly be referred to as “The king of all shows”, posting how he perceived that “the show was fantastic. It was full of color and the music would give you goosebumps. The crafted 3D puppets really carried the animals to life.” Most viewers who have watched the musical over the previous 2 decades can attest that despite being an adaptation of a motion picture, the musical went above and beyond the original.
This coming August’s production of Disney's The Lion King will be hosted in Queen Elizabeth Theatre at British Columbia on Friday 29th August 2025. Queen Elizabeth Theatre, being similarly profound and energetic as the Broadway play with its appealingly planned interior and exterior architecture is deemed by theatergoers as the perfect option to stage this famous show.
