The Lion King

Queen Elizabeth Theatre

The Lion King entered the Broadway scene with a unique approach; many say that the musical, since its debut, had transcended the traditional boundaries of theater and become more than a musical. With its utilization and combination of choreography, outfits, and especially 3D puppetry, the musical turned into a very unique musical rivaling to numerous theater performances. Because the story of The Lion King has animals as the characters, specifically the young Lion Prince Simba and journey to becoming King of the Pride Lands, the hurdle for the production was to bring this tale to life on stage without looking fake. Julie Taymor, the show director, embraced this task and equally embraced the craft of puppetry, expertly utilizing life-sized animal puppets for the live depiction interspersed with accurate costumes based on African tribes that dignified the Broadway classic.

As one of the longest-running musicals, The Lion King has truly gained its rank as one of the most popular musicals in the world. With two seasons worldwide that have been running for more than 15 years, and four other runs that have been performing for more than 2 decades, The Lion King carries on to reach new audiences in new countries. It has been said to repeatedly pull in from both usual theatergoers and theater experts alike in its tours, while garnering several awards and nominations, including Tony Awards and Helpmann Awards.

Since its first showing in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July 1997 and subsequent move to Broadway, New York in October 1997, the reach of The Lion King musical has also grown immensely. Ever since its beginning in 1997, it has been holding seasons in several cities with both local state tours and international tours, spanning locales in Europe like Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, France, and even Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea in Asia to name a few in a very comprehensive record of regions.

The next coming production of The Lion King brings it to British Columbia and will be performing in Vancouver at Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Saturday 6th September 2025.
