“Ain’t Too Proud” is a jukebox musical that chronicles the remarkable journey of the Temptations, from the band’s humble beginnings on the streets of Detroit to their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The production showcases the group’s iconic dance routines and distinctive harmonies, all of which propelled them to the pinnacle of the music charts. With an astonishing 42 Top Ten Hits, including an impressive 14 number ones, the Temptations left an indelible mark on the music industry. This show is the incredible story of their meeting and the remarkable success they achieved: elevating Motown Records to unprecedented heights. However, personal and political conflicts emerged, posing a threat to the unity of the group, coinciding with a period of civil unrest in the United States. This is an exhilarating tale that explores the discovery of brotherly love, the importance of family, unwavering loyalty, and, at its core, the presence of betrayal. The Temptations distinctive music has earned the group three Grammy Awards, with their 1969 recording of the song “Cloud Nine”, becoming the first ever Motown recording to win a Grammy Award.

Their three most memorable records, “My Girl”, “Just My Imagination”, and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”, are among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that helped shape the music of Rock and Roll in the 1960’s. Their 1973 recording of “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” won the Temptations their second Grammy award for Best R&B performance by a Group, while their 1984 recording of “Treat Her Like a Lady”, become their most successful record on R&B radio, reaching number 2 on the R&B Charts, and climbing to number 48 on the Billboard 200. The Temptations recorded sales in the tens of millions, making them among the most successful and popular music groups of the time. The group are known for their help in the evolution of R&B and soul music, and they were pioneers in the development of the new wave of psychedelic soul. Over 50 years and multiple chart-topping songs later, their very first number 1 single, “My Girl”, is still regarded as their signature song to this day, and in 2017, the song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry as being “culturally, historically, or artistically significant.”

The musical “Ain’t Too Proud: Life and Times of The Temptations” features music and lyrics by The Temptations. The story is written by Dominique Morisseau, a three-time Obie Award winner. The production is directed by Des McAnuff, a two-time Tony Award winner. The show’s choreography, which has received high praise, is done by Sergio Trujillo, who won a Tony Award for his work on this Broadway production in 2020. The story is based on the book “The Temptations,” which was written by Otis Williams, one of the most famous members of the group. The musical includes a talented design team consisting of Robert Brill for scenery, Paul Tazewell for costumes, Howell Binkley for lighting, Steve Canyon Kennedy for sound, and Peter Nigrini for projections.

Initially appearing at Berkeley Rep, the show moved to the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC where it ran from June 19, through to July 22, 2018. From there it appeared at the Kennedy Center, and then moved to the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California where it ran from August 21, until September 30, 2018, following its run at the Ahmanson, the show moved to the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, Ontario where it ran from October 11, successfully until November 2018. The musical opened on Broadway in 2019 at the Imperial Theatre, As of March 12, 2020, the show suspended production due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 10, 2021, it was announced that the show would return to the entertainment circuit.

As befits a show about the Temptations, the most infectiously rhythmic of chart-topping R&B groups, “Ain’t Too Proud” keeps time in style. I don’t mean that solely in terms of a beat that makes you feel like dancing.
