The talented Anaïs Mitchell wrote the musical score, lyrics, and story for the musical Hadestown. It narrates a modernized version of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a maiden facing starvation, sets out to work in a grim industrial representation of the Greek underworld as a way to avoid poverty and freezing conditions. Her paramour Orpheus, a destitute singer-songwriter, undertakes on a journey to reclaim her.
In its debut Broadway launch, the Broadway production garnered 14 Tony Awards nods, achieving eight prestigious awards. It achieved itself the sought-after designation of ‘Best Musical,’ bringing immense joy to the eager fans. The performance premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019, garnering accolades. It was acclaimed for its guidance and the exceptional performance of André De Shields. The New York Times characterized it as "exquisite" and "mesmerizing," praising its improvement over the New York Theatre Workshop version. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter termed it "absolutely fabulous," specially commending Gray and Page's exceptional performances.
TimeOut NY urges its readers to enjoy the incredible rendition of Hadestown. They stated, “Here's my advice: Experience hell. And by hell, I'm obviously talking about Hadestown, Anaïs Mitchell's captivating and evocative new Broadway performance. In short, the production modernizes the classic Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice: A lad encounters a girl, they fall in love, they face hardships, they go through trials, and they find themselves in the underworld—sounds like an old story, doesn't it? But it's the genius of Anaïs Mitchell's contemporary version of this enduring tale—and Rachel Chavkin's—that infuse life back into this traditional narrative.”
