The Lion King at Queen Elizabeth Theatre

New York is the birthplace of yet another hit show, Disney’s The Lion King, as it increases its global reach with another limited showing to be performed on Friday 5th September 2025 in Queen Elizabeth Theatre, found in Vancouver, British Columbia. The show tells the tale of growth of a young lion cub named Simba, who is fated by birthright to rule as the King of the Pride Lands following his father. The African savanna however is filled with secrecy and internal strife, as even in this pure and childlike narrative, misfortune comes when the young prince's father Mufasa is murdered because of the betrayal of his wicked uncle Scar, who harbors a secret hatred for the King of these lands. The immature prince is forced to flee from his home and goes into self-imposed banishment that spans years. While away in the forest, he runs into new acquaintances, Timon and Pumbaa, who encourage him to forget his past and live life on his own terms. His easygoing lifestyle then takes a turn when he once again encounters his childhood friend Nala, who reveals the tyranny of Scar to him and requests him to save the people of his land.

This heartfelt and personal narrative of heartbreak, true friendship, and acceptance of duty is enhanced by the original film's music, created by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, supplemented with additional songs and lyrics from the likes of Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have improved and elevated the quality of the show not just in Broadway, but also in international productions.

The Lion King debuted on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The show was an instant box office hit and set a standard for contemporary theater, ushering in the musical's transfer and premiere on the Broadway stage on October 15, 1997.
