The Lion King at Queen Elizabeth Theatre

The tale of Disney’s The Lion King is set in motion in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the little lion Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the deeds of his evil uncle Scar and his impulse to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become the ruling monarch himself. The first act's sequence of occurrences leads to the young prince's banishment from his home and the tale of his ultimate return to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.

The musical, since its inception, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African civilization and history given the show's setting. The narrative itself is actually founded on previously existing African leaders and factual happenings – Simba as an example is the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Imperial Mali who was justly named The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first woman in Broadway history to earn a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, especially outfits used, which paved the way for a faultless staging of the musical. The costumes in particular are gracious depictions of several indigenous tribes in Africa, an exemplification of such is Simba’s outfit in the musical which in fact inspired by Kenyan Maasi warriors' attire. Just like the original 1994 motion picture, the iconic musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African inspiration, with the live adaptation even putting in numbers with lyrics that are performed either partially or fully in African tongue such as Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African inspiration is also clearly seen in choreography, with many of the dances showing off the grace of Bali-inspired movements.

The regalia, African influence, and lifelike stage design all merge effortlessly to deliver an astounding musical.
