The saga of Disney’s The Lion King begins in a fictional region of the African savanna; living in The Pride Lands, the teenage lion Simba is fated to take over after his father, before tragedy strikes because of the actions of his jealous uncle Scar and his impulse to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become King himself. The first half's series of incidents leads to the little lion's escape from The Pride Lands and the account of his consequent journey back to retake his throne and his place as King.
The Lion King, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and historical basis given the play's context. The narrative itself is actually based on historical African heroes and real events – Simba actually equates to the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was appropriately named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, specifically with costume design, which resulted in a faultless Broadway production of the musical. The outfits when seen are respectful representations of some traditional groups in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s outfit in the musical which in fact based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' armor. Just like the original 1994 film, the fantastic musical compositions penned by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African heritage, with the musical even adding compositions with lyrics that are performed either partly or completely in African tongue including Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African theme is also evident in choreography, with a lot of the dances consistently featuring the fluidity of Bali-inspired dance.
The costume design, music, and stellar performances all blend together so well to deliver an unforgettable musical.
