The story of Disney’s The Lion King begins in a vast savanna territory in Africa; based in The Pride Lands, the teenage Prince Simba is destined to succeed as King, before betrayal occurs because of the work of his evil uncle Scar and his desire to take the throne and become ruler himself. The first act's sequence of events leads to the young prince's banishment from his home and the account of his eventual journey back to bring peace to his lands and citizens.
The Lion King, since its inception, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African society and historical texts given the play's context. The story itself is actually taken from historical African warriors and real happenings – Simba actually equates to the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was justly referred to The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in the history of Broadway to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, particularly design, which resulted in an accurate live adaptation of the musical. The regalia alone are respectful representations of a few traditional groups in Africa, an exemplification of such is Simba’s outfit in the musical which in fact based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' armor. Just like the late 1994 movie, the iconic musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African heritage, with the live adaptation even adding compositions with lyrics that are performed either in part or completely in African languages such as Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African motif is also noticeable in dance numbers, with a lot of the performances showing off the fluidity of Bali-inspired movements.
The 3D puppetry, music, and stellar performances all work in harmony to carry out an awesome musical.
