The story of The Lion King begins in a fictional land in Africa; living in The Pride Lands, the teenage lion Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the work of his jealous uncle Scar and his intention to take the throne and become the ruling monarch himself. The first part's sequence of events leads to the young prince's exile from his rightful place and the account of his ultimate journey back to retake his throne and his place as King.
The Lion King, since its formation, had to develop extensive research on real African civilization and history given the show's content. The plot itself is actually taken from previously existing African heroes and actual happenings – Simba as an example is the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the leader of the Imperial Mali who was aptly named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to earn a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, especially design, which paved the way for a precise live adaptation of The Lion King. The outfits alone are perfect representations of several indigenous groups in Africa, a portrayal of such is Simba’s costume in the musical which as it happens inspired by Kenyan Maasi warriors' attire. Just like the previous 1994 motion picture, the iconic musical compositions penned by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African roots, with the live adaptation even adding numbers with lyrics that are performed either in part or fully in African dialects like Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African theme is also noticeable in dance numbers, with several of the dances consistently featuring the fluidity of Bali-inspired choreography.
The regalia, song composition, and lifelike stage design all blend together so well to deliver an awesome musical.
