The main event for Vancouver Opera’s next season has been announced! On Saturday, May 4th, 2024, the performing arts company will present Carmen at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Four thrilling acts by Maestro Leslie Dala are enough to feature the unspoken conflict between class and gender in this romantic thriller from the 19th century. With a five-date run at the venue, the live show will star Sandra Piques Eddy as the feisty gypsy Carmen, who engages in a precarious tryst with Alok Kumar’s portrayal of Don José, a former soldier whose heart long masks a perilous darkness. On top of that, Rachel Peake’s direction will resurrect the original French libretto Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy alongside a stellar supporting cast in a performance that will shake everyone to their core. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre will guarantee everyone a definitive viewing experience of the production! Get your tickets now while they’re still available!

The 19th-century production of Carmen is coming to British Columbia, Canada live on Saturday, May 4th, 2024!
The Vancouver Opera is Canada's second-largest opera company, renowned throughout the world for its excellent mainstage productions, award-winning community programs, and national educational initiatives that have reached more than millions of children and their families. For over forty years, the troupe has established cross-cultural creative partnerships that have recently introduced opera to newer generations of Canadians.
This time around, the company will be presenting its version of Carmen, one of the most beloved and widely performed works in history, featuring an all-star cast that will perform George Bizet’s rich melodies, ultimately bringing this masterpiece to life.
“But the real hero of Carmen is the music. The choruses were finely focused, with the children showing gratifying animation… the orchestra was strong and expertly conducted by Jacques Lacombe, who brought out the energy and refinement of the score. This set the seal on an altogether quite successful Vancouver Opera production of Bizet’s timeless masterpiece,” Vancouver Classical Music shares.
Rachel Peak is back to take on the challenge to direct another classic from Bizet, with the aid of Maestro Leslie Dala at the podium. The production will also feature tenor Alok Kumar and mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy in the leading roles of Don Jose and Carmen, respectively. These two leads will be supported by an all-star cast found below:
Jonelle Sills as Micaela
Nathan Keoughan as Escamillo
Alain Coulombe as Zuniga
Luka Kawabata as Le Dancaïre
Jeremy Scinocca as Le Remendado
Simran Claire as Mercedes
Heidi Duncan as Frasquita
Danlie Rae Acebuque as Morales
Located in downtown Vancouver, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre will set the mood for the production through its advanced lighting effects and stage innovation.
