“The 50th-anniversary tour of “Jesus Christ Superstar” is dynamite. This is a big, pumped-up, go-for-broke staging, delivered with vocal heft and passion. It packs a wallop.” – Greenville Journal.
“A talented group of professionals realizing for us all over again a show that remains as effective now as it was half a century ago.” – Lisa Trifone from Third Coast Review, Chicago.
Jesus Christ Superstar’s story retells the events of Jesus Christ’s passion. The musical’s point of view primarily focuses on one of the 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot. Judas grows wary of Jesus’ followers becoming out of control and even advises him to stay away from the sex worker, Mary Magdalene. Meanwhile, the high priest of Israel, Caiaphas, is threatened by Jesus’ massive following and plots to kill him. Viewers will find familiar occurrences from the Bible’s New Testament, such as Jesus angrily driving out the merchants from the temple, the Passover meal, healing of the lepers, Judas’ betrayal and Jesus’ crucifixion.
Jesus Christ Superstar began as an album musical sung by various artists, with Murray Head as Judas, Ian Gillan as Jesus, Barry Dennen as Pontious Pilate, and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene. In 1971, a rock opera concert was held, and music fans heard the songs performed live for the first time. Several unauthorized musicals based on the album were shut down to protect the rights of the London-based publisher. In the same year that illegal productions were shut down, the official musical opened on Broadway with Tom O’Horgan as director. The musical was met with rave reviews from some critics, and it also earned several Tony Award nominations, won a Drama Desk Award, and a Theater World Award.
Attractions magazine’s Andrew Haynes gave the musical’s 2022 production a stellar review. “As much as the story of Jesus Christ may be timeless, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is definitely a show from the early 1970s that is very much of its time. The influences of the late 1960s and early 1970s music are felt through every song, and truly the idea of a rock opera in and of itself can feel quite dated.” Meanwhile, Broadwayworld’s Nicole Ackman praised the musical’s choreography and cast. “Drew McOnie’s choreography is perhaps the star of the show, as he deftly uses the large ensemble to fill the stage and create the mood. This production and this cast are a perfect way to experience the show for the first time or to revisit an old favorite.” Lastly, Greenville Journal’s Paul Hyde gave the 2022 revival his thumbs-up. “The 50th-anniversary tour of “Jesus Christ Superstar” is dynamite. This is a big, pumped-up, go-for-broke staging, delivered with vocal heft and passion. It packs a wallop.”
